A Holiday Letter to All of Our ARF Supporters
December 2010
To all of our ARF supporters,
Happy Holidays from ARF! We decided to combine our newsletter and holiday card this year into a letter to update you on all of the progress your support has helped us to achieve. Each of you has helped us in some way, whether adopting, volunteering, fostering, or donating – it has all added up to over 750 animals over the last 8 years that faced uncertain, and often perilous, situations now basking in the warmth of safe, secure, and loving homes this holiday season.
Last year at this time the economy was causing even more uncertainty than ever for the animals – and for our ability to continue to fund the rescue of all of the many animals in such desperate need. We appealed to you to send any gift you possibly could and were thrilled to find that so many of you did just that. Every penny of it helped - no gift was too small. Whether it was $5 or $500, it all added up to a big increase in our holiday fundraising, and we were able to continue our efforts to save animals, unimpeded.
So far this year we have helped 77 animals find new, permanent homes. We have significantly increased the number of foster homes we have which will enable us to save even more animals in the future. We have improved upon our already careful pre-adoption screening with home visits, and continue to provide lots of follow up and post adoption support, helping to ease the transition for both the animal and the adopters and ensure adoption success. While we always want to help as many animals as we can, we put in the time and effort it takes to make the best match possible.
We thought we would share with you some of the happy stories that quite possibly would have ended very differently, if not for all of your help this year.
Angel, the sweetest Labradoodle, was living outside in an old chicken coop, too skinny, covered in feces, smelling atrocious and, on top of all of this neglect, physically abused as well. Today, she is the princess of the house with her sparkling coat and sunny disposition endearing her to all - most of all her new, adoring family!
"Hero" is just that in our minds. A badly abused Pit Bull, he was emaciated, scarred and heartworm positive. Today, Hero can be seen romping around the dog park with his 15 lb Dachshund/Yorkie mix friend, Marlow, pulled from a hoarding situation and also adopted from ARF. Hero is shiny and muscular and both he and Marlow are now healthy, happy and carefree!
Perhaps the most heartwarming story is that of Nala, a Newfoundland mix, and her pups. Barely surviving in the heat of a Houston, TX summer, Nala's face was scarred, her teeth bashed in and was believed to have been thrown out of a truck, far from home. She arrived in Aspen, nursing 4 large pups, with a terrible case of heartworm as well as other parasites and fleas. What hair she had left was bleached to a dry brown color. She not only got mastitis from nursing, but a severe upper respiratory infection as well. Nala had horrid reactions to the heartworm treatment and we frankly weren't sure if she was going to make it. Her foster mom slept on the couch with her, nursing her through convulsions.
We are happy to say that all of the puppies got wonderful homes and Nala is now the most loving, wonderful dog. She is free of parasites, although her battle with heartworm is not over. Her thick coat is now beautiful, black and shiny, thick black. She is smart, sweet, listens well, doesn't jump, gives wonderful kisses and LOVES to cuddle - she actually wraps her legs around you! Despite her life of obvious abuse and neglect, she is great with all other dogs, people and kids, loves to hike, and is calm and well adjusted. Best of all, she was just recently adopted by her foster home who considers her their dream dog. Nala even gets to have play dates with one of her pups that was adopted out nearby.
There are so many more, from Thor, the emaciated Great Dane puppy weighing in at only 15 lbs, to the 3 scared and semi-feral puppies rescued from under a porch in the 9th Ward of New Orleans during Mardi Gras, or Bernie, Sugar and Cinnamon, 5 weeks old kittens dumped in a barn – all will spend the holidays in sleeping on soft beds, well-fed, and adored thanks to all of your help. We wish that for every animal in need, and we hope you can help us to save even more animals this year by continuing your support of ARF in any and every way that you can.
Sincerely,
Peggy Corcillo
